This Louis XVI style bonbonnière (French for “candy box”) with a depiction of the famous monument to Peter I on its lid belonged to Alexandra Feodorovna. Peter the Great's monogram, surrounded by a wreath, was engraved on top of a crystal base, the sides of which are decorated with intersecting laurel garlands. Étienne Maurice Falconet’s equestrian statue of Peter the Great is painted here in the camaïeu mauve technique against a pink background. A similar candy box, identical save for its sides and bottom covered in enamel instead of crystal, is in the collection of Queen Elizabeth II.
