The output of Pavel Ovchinnikov’s firm featured enamel “in its every application,” and some types were made only by his company. His artisans were proficient in one of the most labor-intensive techniques — plique-à-jour, French for “letting in daylight,” so-called because it is essentially a miniature version of stained glass. This technique was used in decorating small objects like drinking glasses, shot glasses and candy boxes, often shaped to appear like antique household objects. An example of such items is this exquisite charka, or drinking vessel, with its horizontal shelf-handle completely covered in sparkling plique-à-jour, strikingly reminiscent of medieval stained glass.
