It is impossible to consider Fabergé’s jewelry without special mention of the Easter egg pendants. Not of the same stature as the Imperial Easter eggs, they are nonetheless parallel, desirable, and appropriate Easter gifts, and of course wearable, either on their own or part of a collection on a single necklace. These pendants reflect the same ingenuity, skill, and whimsy as their larger cousins. While some are simple translucent colored guilloché enamel over silver and suspended from gold, most are much more stylized, to the extent that “egg” is only a loose description. Fabergé Museum is rich in charming examples. Several eggs incorporate additional Easter imagery as well, such as the rich yellow pendant in the form of a chick, with almost anthropomorphic gaping mouth, diamond eyes, and gold beak and feet. Another takes the form of a gold bunny offering a tiny stone egg. Deftly and fully carved out of hardstone, yet still oviform, is another chick; similarly carved from agate is an owl with gemstone eyes; and, another stone chick sits astride its gold perch. Some eggs are quite specific in their references, such as the purpurine egg balancing a regimental helmet, the 1914 pendant with the monogram of Alexandra Feodorovna, or the enamel egg mounted within a gold ship’s anchor. And miniature egg pendants provide plenty of canvas to render spectacular dendritic enameling, detailed gold filigree work, or modernist champlevé striped enameling. In short, this quintessentially Russian jewelry offers yet another means for Fabergé’s full expression.
