Allegory of Winter Brooch

Allegory of Winter Brooch - фото
The brooch is decorated with a depiction of a seated Cupid with a burnt-out torch, a symbol of Winter (after François Boucher). This image is nearly identical to one of the eight grisaille enamel miniatures made by Vasili Zuev that decorate an egg in the collection of the Hillwood Museum in Washington, D.C., a gift for the widowed Empress Maria Feodorovna on Easter 1914.

The sepia painting, executed in the camaïeu rose technique, is framed by two rings of “rose” diamonds. The brooch is crowned by a flower and two branches encrusted with diamonds.
