late 16th century

This Christ Pantocrator icon, one of the oldest in the collection, was made in the second half of the 16th century. Christ is depicted in a head and shoulder portrait with an emphasis on his face, which gives the icon a more intimate feel and marks it for use in individual devotion. Similar depictions became widely popular during the reign of Ivan the Terrible.
