Ivan Aivazovsky, the unrivaled Russian marine painter, created over 6,000 artworks over the course of his long life. He went on five large sea voyages, accompanied Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich as an artist and participated in the defense of Sevastopol, as well as in various expeditions and battles. The power of the sea is tangible in Aivazovsky’s deftly-executed View of Lake Sevan. It is no coincidence that the lake, the largest in the Caucasus, was known to the Armenians in ancient times as the Sea of Gegham.
